How to Work from Home with Kids

I work at a school, and I was really looking forward to Spring Break. Finally, a time to unwind, take it easy, catch up on housework, a spend quality time with my children. However, with this pandemic, Spring Break has not been exactly what I envisioned!

We are now having a 3-week period of staying at home. I’m on a mission to make sure these 3-weeks of being “stuck” at home are not wasted time. I feel myself going on a tailspin with all the things I want to work on, what I want my children to do, and most of all how to make sure that boredom does not cause my children to lash out at each other!

So what’s my plan? How do I make sure we accomplish a lot without wasting time? I don’t’ want to get to the end of the 3-weeks and find out that we’ve accomplished nothing. For the next couple of day I am focusing on creating a plan that will include:

  • A daily schedule
  • Household chores
  • Schoolwork
  • Fun family time
  • Menu planning… which is going to be hard not knowing what will be available!
  • Outside activities/ exercise

I’ll add to the list if I see I need to, but for right now I think I have a good plan in place!

3 essential schedules for working from home with kids

Daily Schedule

This is the daily schedule I plan to follow! These times are not set in stone, they are just a guideline.  I find I function much better and feel more organized when we follow a schedule.  My children will know what to do instead of complaining they are bored all the time or abuse electronics.  I am hoping this will help us to feel more accomplished every day.  I will tweak the schedule as needed depending on how it goes!

Household Chores

Oh boy!  The never ending household chores. One thing I am grateful for is having extra time to actually focus on my house and on things that for too long have been ignored!  I have created a list of household chores that I would like to accomplish during these 3-weeks (and beyond!).  I am enlisting the help of my children as they are old enough to handle a lot of it with minimal supervision!

I’ve divided household chores into three categories:

  • Daily chores
  • Weekly chores
  • Organizational projects
Daily and weekly chores will be done by everyone on their assigned day, and the organizational projects will be done by me.

With the organization projects I will focus on a specific area every day. For example organizing:

  • Kitchen drawers
  • Pantry
  • Linen closet
  • Bathroom cabinets/ drawers
  • Refrigerator/ Freezer
  • Storage area
  • Bedrooms and closets

Weekly household and dinner chores

Working schedule

My working schedule is still not defined.  I still work a 9-5 even though I am working from home.  Once I know how much time I have to dedicate to my 9-5, I will be able to define my blogging and online business working schedule and goals.  For now I will be focusing on:

  • creating blog posts and promoting them
  • learning how to use Pinterest to drive traffic to my blog
  • working on my virtual assistant course “Overwhelmed to Overbooked “
  • learning about SEO and digital marketing
I hope that even in the midst of this huge change we will find time to enjoy this blessing of more time with our loved ones.  Hopefully, your relationship with your children and spouse will grow and you will find joy from being at home and finally being able to dedicate time to those projects that never seem to get done.  Please share in the comments below what you have done to implement working from home with kids.  What does your schedule look like?  What do you hope to accomplish during this time at home?
